Hello there again my fellow sea changers. As you may know, I have been spending a bit of time recently researching ways and means to make money online in an effort to fund that all important sea change. Today I am going to target a well-known freelancing site known as Fiverr.
I wrote about this site briefly in a previous post on earning money online from home as I discussed the possibilities of freelance work and to be honest have not really given it much thought since. That is until recently when I have been doing some online reviews of software and found that many of the testimonials are actually performed by professional reviewers that the software developers have found on Fiverr (don’t get me started on that little red flag – that is a rant for another day).
So that got me thinking, Can you make money with Fiverr? My word you can – Let’s check it all out…
Click on the video above to see how to create a Gig in Fiverr.
What is Fiverr?
Fiverr is “world’s largest freelance services marketplace” that matches freelance workers with projects starting at $5 per ‘gig’ (hence the name). The theory behind the site is all about cost-effectiveness and lean operations meaning that new and successful entrepreneurs can get small jobs completed quickly and cost effectively by talented freelance operators. The platform offers the opportunity for freelancers to offer up services allowing those in need to quickly and effectively find a solution that suits them at the time.
Put it this way, if you have any type of business, marketing, artistic or online content creation skill then there is probably something for you to do on Fiverr.
How does Fiverr work?
With Fiverr, freelancers offer ‘gigs’ with the option to post a number of offers at once ( I think 7 to start with). Some people make extremely good money from it if they are offering quick, pre done work – i.e. such as 5 recipes for a healthy cook book or 3 social media posts whilst others use it to get work that allows them to earn a small income whilst building their own website or online business. As you get more gigs you can also increase your starting price allowing you to make better money. Alternatively, if you do a good gig for someone they are allowed to re-hire you at a better or negotiated rate.
Is Fiverr still 5 bucks?
Unfortunately, as time has progressed, Fiverr has transitioned into a more general freelancing site with costs ranging vastly from around $10 up to the thousands. That said, this can be an advantage to you as you start out in this caper as you can charge a little less to start with until your name gets out there a bit more. This will attract the bootstrappers who are willing to try you out at a cheaper rate.
What can you do on Fiverr?
The question here is really what can’t you do on Fiverr? If you are looking for examples, the main membership page headings are a good place to start.
The most common gigs however are as follows:
Social media services
Are you an expert on social media marketing, content, post creation or strategy. This is a very time consuming process for many hence one that is often outsourced.
If writing is your thing, then blog post writing might be something worth considering. Many established affiliate marketers outsource a good majority of their post writing requirements so if you are able to punch out 1000 odd words of quality writing in about an hour or so then you are going to make money. And if a website owner likes you, they will want to keep you long term. Alternatively one of the hardest things about starting a new business is business case writing etc. These are just two examples- you can write training materials, technical documentation, advertising copy, email campaigns and so on and so on.
Pre written materials
Or you can look at writing from another angle – have you written a lot of content that you are looking to on sell? This might be recipes, sporting workouts, instructions, how to’s or e-books. Just make sure it is your own work and not something you found on your laptop and thought you could on sell.
Images are a huge market and content owners are always looking for good photos, gifs, and graphics that they can use on their sites. You can use Fiverr to set up a good alternative to the big photo microstock sites.
Another huge market with endless opportunity – logo creation for example is extremely popular.
Fiverr is not just limited to the fingers – if you have a good voice, a video camera and microphone and can read a script, then voice over work is a good way that you can earn money online. Just check out the testimonials on all the shonky software release sales pages out there.
Look, honestly I could add another 100 or so job types to this list and still not hit them all – there is computer programming, research, copy editing, video and audio creation, website SEO, virtual assistant work and so much more. I saw one the other day where you can connect to a seller via online video and they will run you through a personal training fitness session. I mean the sky really is the limit.
I have built an online business that makes me money while I sleep by following four simple steps.
And best of all, you can start your own online journey and learn this method for yourself totally FREE … Click on the button below to see how I did it.
To get started you will need to join the platform. It is free and you can use Facebook, a Google account or your email address. From there, you set up a user name and password, verify your account via email and you are in!
From here you can apply to become a seller.
As you create your profile, Fiverr provides some good information on what works, what doesn’t and how to set up your ‘gigs’. For your profile, you will need to enter:
- Personal Information
- Contact details etc.
- Professional Information
- Linked accounts
- Social Media links
- Personal contact links
- Account security
- Phone number and email verification
- Security questions
What do you need to consider?
Once you are set up you will be able to start creating your first gig. Before you do so, there are some important things to consider and do:
1. Do your research – have a look around and see how others are promoting gigs within your chosen field. Find out how they are offering their services, how they are described, keywords and tags used (this helps buyers find you), their product descriptions and how they have set up their profiles. Din’t reinvent the wheel, check out what the experienced sellers are doing and see how it fits with your own plans and what you may be able to offer that sets you apart.
2. Know your price – Charge too much as a newbie and you will not attract any buyers, too little and you will be doing a lot of work for not much money (although this will help raise your profile and build a portfolio). Again, check out other sellers of different experience levels and see what they are charging – remember – as with anything, the market will set the price
3. Know your work – As with pricing, you need to know exactly what it is that you will be doing. This helps you plan the number of work offers you can accept as well as ensuring that you are not coming up short in what you have offered. Remember that Fiverr works on a rating and review system as well so if you fail to deliver part of what is expected or accept so many jobs that you cannot complete any of them then you will be doing yourself an injustice in the long run.
4. Know your offer – With each gig that you create, you have the opportunity to set up job levels (see below). As with being clear in your work, make sure you know what your offer and bundles are so that you can clearly outline your alternatives within your gig offer.
5. Sell yourself – As this platform has grown, more and more freelancers are joining up and with them, competition is obviously increasing. How you go about offering your gigs is a reflection of the work that you will do so if you have the space in the setup fields to outline your skills, what you do, how good you are and/or provide examples then do it. You need to be able to stand out from the crowd. Trust me, if you half-a$$ it here, you will not be hired.
Creating a Gig
Once you are signed up and done your research, you can then start to create gigs. This step should be quite straight forward if you have done the work outlined in the previous section and the platform will take through it all step by step.
As you set up your first gig, you are assigned as a level one seller meaning you can upload up to 7 gigs to start with. Once you make sales and complete tasks, you are assigned higher levels meaning you can post more gigs.
Once this is done, then you can sit back and hopefully wait for the jobs to come in. If not, go back to the considerations list above and revisit your setup to ensure that you are giving yourself the best possible chance of making some money.
Can you make money with Fiverr?
Absolutely you can! Like any legitimate online money making venture, it can take time and unless you are an expert, well-known or have a large portfolio, you are not going to be able to command top money immediately. However, as you start to do more, get your name out there and build a good rating status, you will be able to raise your prices to meet current market rates.
Do I recommend it?
Look, this is definitely one of the really good ways that you can develop an online business and fund your sea change. As long as you have a good work ethic, some patience to build a good following and the skills to produce good work, then this may be just the ticket for you.
To be honest, the only downside I see here is the constant addition of new sellers to the platform and the fact that this method will not allow you set up a business with passive income – unless you start to sub contract your work.
And there it is – my honest opinion on whether you can make money with Fiverr. I hope it has been helpful and as usual, please do not hesitate to comment below if you have any questions, need some advice or have any experiences to share.
