Hello there again my fellow sea changers. Today we continue our journey into the world of ‘get paid to' apps with a look at an extremely popular one called Sweatcoin. This app provides access to those who not only wish to get fit by walking, but make a little cash from it as well. Can you make money with Sweatcoin? I am sure you can – after a LOT of walking. Let's however check out my Sweatcoin review to see if it is worth it… .
As with most of these apps, you will make some money with time and patience. They are generally above board and do pay out once you have completed enough tasks or played long enough to warrant it. My concern is usually (apart from the fact that I do sometimes wonder what they are doing with my phone data behind the scenes but let's just leave that for now) that the time it takes to make the cash and whether you would be better off spending this time elsewhere – although for this one I guess if you are just keeping your phone in your pocket while you walk then maybe it could be one of the better ones. So, for this review, I will:
- Download the app
- Walk around for a day or two
- Time it all
- See how much $$ I can earn for the steps I have taken…
What is Sweatcoin?
Sweatcoin is a “get paid to” smartphone app that pays you by “converting your steps into a currency to spend on cool products and services”. The premise is quite simple:
- Download the app onto your smartphone.
- Go for a walk to earn ‘Sweatcoins’.
- Use Sweatcoins to claim prizes such as Bang and Ollufsen headphones, high-tech shoes, iPhones, anti-gravity yoga classes or Apple Watches.
Based on my experiences with the app, Sweatcoins work out to be around 1 coin per 1000 and a bit steps (I couldn't calculate an exact number as the percentages seem to change as you take more steps – I may be wrong but that is what I got anyway). Further coins can be earned via referring friends and watching some ads as well as a 2x bonus for a selected 20-minute period each day – say as if you were just about to go for a walk or a run. There does not appear to be any limit on earnings dependent upon how long you wish to be involved.
Details
How do you earn?: By walking.
How much can you earn?: There is no limit dependent upon how much you can walk.
How do you get paid?: PayPal and via material prizes, trips and subscriptions.
How much you need to make before cashing out: 20000 sweatcoins.
Platform: iOS, Android.
Login with: This one is a little more intrusive than some of the others wanting access to your google account, email address and a phone number so that it can track your steps via Google Fitness on your cell phone.
Then I found a way to make money online with my very own website.
I used the time I wasted trying to make money with these games and built two websites that make real cash!!
Joining for FREE was one of the best decisions I have ever made.
My experience
I downloaded Sweatcoin app via their links within the Google App Store (I use an android device), entered my email address and then allowed the app to count steps and access to “Google Fit” in the background (It did point out to me that it doesn't keep location information so I guess that is something). And finally it asked for my actual phone number so that it can assign my “Sweatcoin wallet” and after entering the code that was sent to me by text, I was off and running (well walking but you get the picture).
I then spent the day going about my business as usual. I went for a walk, did an exercise class and wandered around home (I work from home).
What were my outcomes?
Let's be short and sweet here:
Total steps taken by ‘walking': 7498
Total Sweatcoins earned: 5.3
Can you make money with Sweatcoin?
I earned 5.3 Sweatcoins for an average day's walking which is 19,994.7 short of making my first $1000 or collecting one of the prizes above. So let's assume that if I kept recording my steps in the same fashion as above that it would take me roughly 3773 days (or 10 years) to make $1000.
So I am going to go out on a limb here and say that in terms of making ‘good' money then I have to give it a hard pass. I will say though that as you are not really doing ‘anything' apart from walking around as you normally do, then if you are someone who is on their feet all day, or willing to watch some video ads and invite friends, then you might just get there a little faster. I will keep this one running and report back…
Note: It is a bit of a battery drainer – just sayin…
Do I recommend it?
Look, I have to say that it looks to me that things in this area of online money making capers are as I have always found them to be – that in this case you will need to walk a real lot to get a not-so-decent return on your time. That said, if you are on your feet all day then it could be worth it for a big payday in the future – maybe. At the very least, it might motivate you to do a little exercise, which is always a good thing too…
I would personally however suggest that you look into some other ways to earn an income online that can make you far more money for the same amount of work as this one is not going to sustain you in an ongoing fashion.
Conclusion
And there it is – my honest opinion on whether you can make money with Sweatcoin. I hope it has been helpful and as usual, please do not hesitate to comment below if you have any questions, need some advice or have any experiences to share.
