Hey there sea changers, when many of us think of essential oil companies, we tend to think about the big players in the industry such as Young Living and doTERRA. And furthermore, when we look at starting ourselves a little business – be it online or under the good ole party plan model – one option we have is Multi Level Marketing. With that in mind, today I wanted to introduce you to another essential oil brand out there that may interest you if you are looking to break away from the big boys and see how you go elsewhere. So then let's have a look at my Purely Essential Oils MLM Review…
What is MLM?
Multi-level marketing (MLM) programs are the mainstay of the ‘party plan' world of products such as Tupperware, Mary Kay and Amway etc. and within the essential oils market. The multi level aspects of MLM come from its hierarchical nature in which you make commissions based not only on those that you sell to, but also the sales of those whom you ‘sign' into membership arrangements as well.

In short, the process works as follows:
- You join the program, either via referral from another person (known as your up line) or directly through their website.
- You promote the products of the company via parties, workshops or online.
- As you make sales, you offer incentives to your customers to sign up as a member of the program (there are different names for this but they all mean the same thing).
- That new member is then placed ‘underneath' you in a hierarchical arrangement (known as your down line).
- You, and a number of levels of your up line, then gain extra commissions for everything they sell as well.
- If they manage to refer their customers into memberships, they also become a member of your down line allowing you to make up line commissions as well.
The number of levels of your up and down lines will vary depending on the program you have joined. Commission rates will also change as your down line grows or contracts and many will also offer other incentives such as total company sales percentages and/or access to membership prizes as your own business grows.
Who is Purely Essential Oils?
As the name suggests, Purely is an essential oils company that focuses on purity and quality of product within their essential oils line. Their mission statement:
“Deliver products free from harmful toxins so every family can enjoy safe and pure ingredients that work.”
Based in Mobile Alabama, Purely was established by Tyler Pham and Andrew Khong and as per their mission, the founders promote their passion for purity and for doing things right including the use of sustainably sourced products, proper treatment of staff and ethical sales and marketing processes and programs.
What do they Sell?
Purely is an essential oils company with a large range of oils based products including:
- 100% pure essential oils
- 100% pure essential oil blends
- Essential and natural oil based beauty range:
- Goat milk lotions
- Skin care and rejuvenation oils
- Lip balms
- Bath soaks and bombs
- Natural deodorants
- Foot healing creams
- Shaving and bath soaps
- Toothpaste and mouthwash
- Hand lotion and sanitiser
- Hair care – shampoo and conditioner
- Men's tattoo oils
- Diffusing bracelets
- Rubs – sports and vapor
- Home cleaning
- All purpose cleaner
- Laundry detergent
One big advantage I also see with Purely is that they are starting to release CBD oils based products as well. CBD oil is an immature but booming industry that is set to grow rapidly over the next few years as legality issues are adjusted in many countries. This provides a great opportunity to those wishing to expand their essential oils based sites to cover other natural remedies as well. CBD Products include:

- CBD Vegan Gummies
- CBD Joint and Muscle rub
Pricing for all products is on par with the bigger players.
MLM Program outline
The Purely MLM program is known as its Advisor program. The base details are as follows:
Commission rate: Tiered by sales amount as follows:
- 25% – $0 – $800
- 30% – $801 – $1599
- 35% – $1600 +
Down line commission rates: Up to 6% to two levels (higher ranks can go to four but I could find no information on this)
Minimum monthly spend to qualify for commissions – $200
Payment terms: 1st and 16th of each month
Application required?: Yes, basic personal information and promotion strategy.
Marketing materials provided: Text links, banners, training videos, documents, and resources.

I guess the main point of difference with this program is that it allows you to gain commissions on your own purchases meaning that you can make sales to others without them having to sign up themselves (i.e. they don't need to purchase a starter kit). This is different to many others (such as doTERRA and Young Living) who will not allow this practice and may be of advantage to those of you who wish to display the oils in a shop front/yoga studio etc. This way, you can simply earn commissions on the sales you make without having to sign people into their own memberships.
As with most other MLM programs however, to become a member you will need to purchase a starter kit.
As you can see, the pricing ranges from $100 up to $270 which is quite standard amongst MLM programs of this nature. You will also be required to maintain a personal purchase volume (PV) of around $200 per month to qualify for commissions – you generally get 1 PV point per $1 spent. Granted however that this is a bit easier if you can purchase for others under your own account.
Ranking structure
The ranking structure for Purely is quite straight forward compared to others with commission rates rising based on the number of underlings you have within your down line. Early ranking commissions are as follows:
As with the bigger programs, rankings are determined by the total PV that you and those of your down line generate in a calendar month. This can get quite complex but in simple terms if the number of PV to get to Advisor level above is 500 and if you purchase 200 PV personally, then you need a further 300 PV in sales from those in your down line to qualify for the extra commission. This means that you can have three people making $100 worth of purchases or just one at $300.
Most MLM programs manage it this way so as to ensure that you are getting sales based results rather than simply signing people up whom don't purchase.

What else do you get?
The other aspect of the membership process with Purely is its Pure Perks program. The Pure Perks program is a very good way of ensuring that your down line are making purchases each month which can not only set you up with a steady commission stream, keep you up in the rankings as well.
Pure Perks is program which allows members to set up monthly recurring orders in return for extra discounts, prizes and bonus products. The basis of these types of programs are that the longer a person keeps their monthly order running, the higher discounts and better prizes they receive.
The starting point is a10% discount and free shipping which rises with ongoing monthly purchases. With Pure Perks, there is a $60 minimum order amount to be met each month to qualify for the loot (a $30 order will however maintain your current levels without penalty or qualifying points for level increase).
At the end of the day, one of the biggest hurdles to success within MLM is making enough sales per month to earn your commissions. And to be honest, as you start out, there may be plenty of months when you might only make 50PV worth of sales via your down line meaning you are forced to make 150PV worth of sales yourself just to earn a couple of bucks in commission (yep, spend $150 to make $12). So if you are someone who is looking to start a business with this company, then Pure perks would be a must-include option for any new members that you manage to sign up.
What is good about it?
So, after a good look around the site and looking at all the options I could find, I do like the following:
- The website is clean and easy to follow.
- You can earn commissions on personal sales – this is a BIG plus.
- Commission rates for entry level sales are much higher than most other programs (DoTERRA 2% and Young Living 8% – however both pay a flat bonus of around $60 per starter kit purchase).
- I like the addition of CBD Oil products – this is a booming market and opens a whole new opportunity for natural living and chemical free remedy sites.
- Great platform for intermittent and singular sales.
What is no so good about it?
There are also some things to be aware of including:
- No discount for general sales (doTERRA and Young Living offer around 25% discount to all members – but no commissions on personal sales).
- Information on the website in regards to the MLM program itself is limited – I had to do a lot of digging to find some of it and still could not find information on commission rates for higher rank levels.
I don't know, Purely is supposed to be one of the big players and after looking through the sites of the biggest ones, it just doesn't seem to have the ‘pizzazz' of the others. It is clean and I could follow it easily but from the point of view of promoting this company as part of an online business structure, then there is just something a little flat about it. Maybe it is just the plainness of the bottle labels, I don't know, but that is just what I personally feel when looking at it.
My final thoughts
Look, MLM is not an easy platform to make money in, but if you are passionate about essential oils and like this brand, then to be honest, I cannot see much in there that would cause me to warn you off. The MLM platform (from what I could see anyway) is quite straight forward and certainly not as complicated as this bigger players in this field. And from a startup point of view, if you are in a position where you can display these oils for single sales opportunities, then the fact that you can make great commissions via your own purchases is a definite advantage.
I was also unable to locate any negative reviews in terms of non-payment or poor quality products for this site.
